Impact June 2016: Service Projects & Women's Issues

June 2017 donations will be posted when available; below are the June 2016 Impact donations so you can see the organizations the Foundation has previously impacted.

The Foundation was proud to continue its mission of service in June. Together we participated in three projects with amazing participation from First Trust employees.

First, we collected new and gently used stuffed animals to be donated to fire and police departments, churches and homeless shelters through the organization Stuffed Animals for Emergencies (SAFE).  SAFE gives stuffed friends to children who are in emergency situations such as accidents, abuse, and weather emergencies. As the donations mounted up, we couldn’t help but smile at the piles and piles of stuffed friends (including Mickey Mouse riding a horse!) who were just waiting to go help.

On June 22, we were privileged to have Kim Whitehouse from Send a Smile Today come into the office for a Lunch-n-Serve project.  SAST’s mission is to let cancer patients know they are never alone by mailing handmade cards to patients from the time of their diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.  Employees from both the Wheaton and Austin offices gathered to hear about how Kim’s own personal experience with cancer drove her to starting SAST. We then got to help with SAST’s mission by making, coloring and signing cards that would be sent to patients.

And for the last, but certainly not least, service project for June, we collected donations of household goods for our friends in Austin at the Mobile Loaves & Fishes Community First! Village. In anticipation of our two sponsored micro-homes becoming chosen by new residents of the Village, the Foundation put out a call for donations to make each house a home. We asked for not only practical items like fans and dishes but also for those little things that bring a sense of warmth and joy to a home like wind chimes, games to play and welcome mats. In Austin, we also asked for additional grocery and cleaning items to complete the homes. And our employees, like always, answered the call!! Our first house is scheduled to become occupied in mid-August and we couldn’t be happier that our formerly homeless friends will now have a place to call their own.

* Extra Difference:  For all the joy that we had in June, we also experienced extreme sorrow for the victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida where 49 people were killed and 53 others wounded. In support and memory of those victims and their families, the Foundation donated $1500 to the National Center for Victims of Crime
